Scott found a used pair of Hella 500s for only $30,
and couldn't pass it up. He tried to pass it off as an unromantic Valentines
Day gift. :-)
We mounted them into the factory fog light holes.
So far we're very impressed with the lights. They are a bit brighter than
the stock high beams. They use a 55W H3 bulb.
Scott came up with a REALLY nice way to wire them up.
We're striving to give the Jeep dealerships as little reason as possible
to void any of the warrenty, so we did the cleanest possible install. Since
the lights are driving lights, we'll really only want to use them in conjunction
with the high beams. So, instead of putting a switch in the cab to control
these lights, the relay is triggered by the stock high beams.
Upon popping the cover off of the main fuse/relay box in the engine compartment, Scott found two open spaces for relays. Instead of mounting the relay in some obscure place, he took advantage of one of these spaces.
The result....a VERY 'stock' looking fuse/relay box
(Read: the average Jeep mechanic won't notice any non-factory wiring).
The wires to the lights, are wrapped in that plastic flexible tube stuff,
that the factory likes to use...so the mechanics won't see any stray wires
hanging out either.
